UMSDOS12 install disk: This is an version of the Slackware Linux distribution made to be installed onto existing DOS partitions without the need for repartitioning or reformatting. The system will be installed into a \linux directory on one of your DOS partitions, and will be bootable through the use of a boot disk. Don't create a \linux directory on your dos drive prior to installing. All of the Slackware bootkernel disks support UMSDOS, so you can pick whichever one of those seems best suited to your hardware. You will need 4 megabytes minimum to install this software. You MUST also make the U1 disk, and the Q disks, and install them along with at least the normal Slackware A series. Like with the other package disks, just copy the files onto MS-DOS formatted disks. The Q series is needed because the kernels on the A series don't have UMSDOS support, but all the ones on the Q series do. NOTE: The Q disks may not fit on 1.2 MB floppies. If you can't install from a 1.44 MB second floppy drive, stick the kernel you plan to use from the Q series on your U1 disk, and ignore the warnings when you install it. I tried installing the A, U, and one kernel from the Q series (but not kernel source) and found it took slightly less than 12 megabytes. So, to give Linux a test drive, that's the smallest space you can squeeze a minimal system into. I'll take any bug reports or comments you have on this. I get *tons* of mail, so if I don't answer yours, don't take it personally. :^) I wish I could answer it all. Good luck, and have fun trying this out! --- Patrick Volkerding volkerdi@mhd1.moorhead.msus.edu volkerdi@ftp.cdrom.com
